Farmers Market Week was created by the USDA to promote the growing number of farmers markets, estimated at around 8,100 nationwide in 2013. New markets have opened rapidly in the last two decades, expanding by 700 percent since the mid-1990s according to data from the United States Department of Agriculture. A new program this year allows the Cotton Mill Farmers Market in Carrollton to accept SNAP dollars from the USDA’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, opening access to healthy foods to many more local families. SNAP participants get double the value on approved items for every Food Stamp dollar spent at farmers markets, stretching their grocery budgets even further.

Locally grown fruits and vegetables provide incredible bang for the buck due to primarily organic farming methods and minimal added costs from packaging or transportation. This means your farmers market purchases are fresher, less processed and loaded with vitamins and nutrients. Your investment directly supports local farmers and encourages a healthy economy and environment. So check out our west Georgia markets this weekend. Your body and your budget will thank you!
