Community Health Needs Assessments

Tanner Health System’s long-standing commitment to the community spans more than 60 years. Deeply rooted in Tanner’s mission, the organization’s commitment to improving the health of the community is a logical extension of its direct, daily patient care activities. The instantly recognizable blue and white “H” sign near each of Tanner’s hospital facilities signifies more than a place that patients and families can depend on for care—it signifies the heart of a community.

Today’s healthcare environment is one of challenge, change and complexity, yet through collaborative efforts and unique partnerships Tanner seeks to focus on the “health” as much as the “care” in health care and to prioritize the health status improvement of the communities Tanner serves as a vital goal of the organization.

In 2012, each of Tanner Health System’s hospital facilities—Tanner Medical Center/Carrollton, Tanner Medical Center/Villa Rica and Higgins General Hospital—began the process of conducting a comprehensive Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) to further identify the health needs of their communities and develop an Implementation Strategy responding to appropriate population sub-groups and health conditions for improved community health.

These comprehensive, multifactor assessments included the collection and analysis of quantitative data, as well as qualitative input directly from residents gathered through community surveys, interviews and focus groups. Through the CHNA process, Tanner has identified the greatest health needs among each of its hospital’s communities, enabling Tanner to ensure that its resources are appropriately directed toward outreach, prevention, education and wellness opportunities where the greatest impact can be realized.

Upon lengthy review of the CHNA findings, the priority areas to be addressed in each of Tanner’s Community Health Implementation Strategies during FY 2014-2016 include:

  1. Access to care
  2. Chronic disease education, prevention and management (obesity, heart disease, diabetes and cancer)
  3. Mental health

The Tanner Medical Center, Inc. Board of Directors has approved and adopted these Implementation Strategies to address the community health needs identified by the CHNAs.
